Kedarnath Dham holds an ancient and powerful place in Hindu tradition. According to legend, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the sins committed during the battle. Shiva, unwilling to forgive them easily, disguised himself as a bull and hid in the Garhwal Himalayas. When Bhima recognized him and tried to stop him, Shiva vanished into the earth. It is believed that different parts of his body appeared at five locations, which later became known as the Panch Kedar. The hump of the bull emerged at Kedarnath, making it the most revered among them.
The present stone temple of Kedarnath is believed to have been originally constructed by the Pandavas and later revived and renovated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Built from massive grey stone slabs, the temple has stood strong for centuries despite harsh weather, earthquakes, and floods. After his life’s mission, Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have attained samadhi near Kedarnath, further strengthening the site’s spiritual importance. Even today, Kedarnath symbolizes devotion, endurance, and the unwavering faith of millions of pilgrims.
Kedarnath remains open only for a few months every year due to extreme weather. Choosing the right season is important for a safe and comfortable yatra.

Badrinath Dham is one of the most ancient pilgrimage sites in India and is deeply associated with Lord Vishnu. Ancient scriptures describe Badrinath as a place where Vishnu meditated for thousands of years for the welfare of humanity. It is said that Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree to protect him from harsh weather, which is why the region came to be known as Badri Van and the deity as Badrinath.
Historically, Badrinath gained prominence when Adi Shankaracharya rediscovered the idol of Lord Vishnu from the Alaknanda River in the 8th century and reinstalled it in the temple. Since then, Badrinath has remained a central part of the Char Dham Yatra. The temple has been rebuilt multiple times due to natural calamities but continues to stand as a symbol of preservation of Sanatan Dharma and spiritual discipline.
Badrinath is accessible by road and suitable for pilgrims of all age groups, but weather still plays a crucial role.

Yamunotri Dham is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the daughter of Surya Dev and sister of Yama, the god of death. According to Hindu belief, bathing in the sacred waters of Yamuna protects devotees from untimely death and grants spiritual purification. Yamunotri marks the origin of the Yamuna River, which plays a vital role in Indian civilization and religious life.
The temple at Yamunotri was originally built by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the 19th century. Over time, it has suffered damage due to earthquakes and weather conditions and has been reconstructed several times. Despite its relatively modest size compared to other Dhams, Yamunotri holds deep spiritual value. The surrounding hot water springs, especially Surya Kund, are believed to possess divine energy and are an integral part of traditional rituals performed by pilgrims.
Yamunotri requires a short trek, so choosing a stable weather season is highly recommended.
| Season | Months | Weather | Travel Experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | May | Cold but manageable | Fresh surroundings, temple opening |
| Summer | June | Mild | Best time for trekking |
| Monsoon | July – August | Rainy | Trek becomes slippery |
| Autumn | September | Clear and cold | Ideal with fewer pilgrims |
| Winter | October – April | Snowfall | Temple closed |
Yamunotri, the source of River Yamuna, requires a short trek and is best suited for pilgrims comfortable with moderate walking.

Gangotri Dham is revered as the earthly origin of the sacred River Ganga. According to ancient legend, King Bhagirath performed severe penance here to bring the Ganga down from heaven to earth in order to liberate the souls of his ancestors. Lord Shiva accepted the river’s immense force on his matted locks, gently releasing her onto the earth, thus preventing destruction.
The Gangotri temple was constructed in the early 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha commander. Over the centuries, Gangotri has remained a place of deep meditation, spiritual reflection, and devotion. The river that flows from Gangotri, later emerging fully at Gaumukh Glacier, is worshipped as a living goddess. Gangotri represents purity, sacrifice, and the eternal connection between heaven and earth.
Gangotri is accessible by road and offers a relatively easy journey compared to other Dhams.
